  • Glucose Degradation Product (GDP) Disrupts Peritoneal Membrane Function

Growth of new, immature blood vessels on the peritoneal membrane is linked with ultrafiltration failure. Exposure to the GDP methylgyoxal (MGO) up-regulated both vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and suppressed platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in vitro, potentially disrupting the balance of angiogenesis.

  • Biocompatible PD Solutions Maintain Membranes Longer

Independently of inflammation, biocompatible PD solutions helped 71 patients keep a steady level of solute transport over 7.5 years, compared to 295 patients who used standard solutions. Read the abstract.

  • Olive Oil Polyphenols and Peritoneal Fibrosis

It’s not just for cooking any more. Researchers have studied the ability of components of extra virgin olive oil to prevent or treat fibrosis and thickening of the peritoneal membrane, both in vivo and in vitro. The polyphenols were not able to reverse fibrosis, but did help to prevent it, and the authors suggest further research.
